Friday August 8, 2025 9:45am - 11:00am PDT
How do we ensure every elementary grade level contributes meaningfully to 5th-grade CAST success? In this hands-on session, participants will experience how phenomena-based instruction and intentional SEP development across K–5 prepare students for CAST’s complex performance tasks. We’ll kick things off with a phenomena-driven lesson hook, modeling how real-world events engage students and spark inquiry. Then, we’ll analyze released CAST questions to highlight how the test emphasizes Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) over Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs)—requiring students to model, investigate, explain, and argue from evidence. Next, we’ll dig into the four most common SEPs found on CAST: developing and using Models. planning and carrying Out investigations, constructing explanations, engaging in argument from evidence, participants will collaborate to uncover grade-level NGSS skills that lay the foundation for these practices—discovering how observation, pattern recognition, questioning, and basic data collection in early grades support higher-order reasoning later on, and finally, teachers will analyze sample CAST questions, identify the thinking demands, and reflect on how their instruction supports 5th grade readiness. Walk away with a vertical alignment handout, a CAST sample question guide, and evidence-based teaching strategies to bring rigorous, inclusive Tier 1 science instruction to life across all grade levels.

Differentiating Gamified Education with Decktoys LIMITED
Friday August 8, 2025 9:45am - 11:00am PDT
Decktoys is a great software tool to differentiate instruction by letting students literally choose their path. It allows students to work on different tasks, individually or collaboratively, while also making it easy to immediately pull them back together for whole-class instruction or quickly place them in small groups. Participants will learn how Decktoys works and how to use it to make learning fun, engaging, and creative, while maintaining high standards. Participants will also learn how to use the AI-embedded tools in Decktoys to quickly create their decks and then customize them as much as they want. We will take time during the session for participants to find and customize Decks relevant to participants’ subject areas and grade levels (Grades 3 and up) from the thousands already made. We will learn to use the assessment tools in Decktoys to make formative and summative assessments quickly, as well as get results quickly and easily. I will also share some holiday-themed “escape room” style Decks that I have created that participants can use to make learning culturally relevant for our diverse populations, including Decks for Black History Month, Asian History Month, and Cinco de Mayo.

What if We Let Students Lead the Thinking? -The Power of WEll-Timed Questions
Friday August 8, 2025 1:45pm - 3:00pm PDT
In this interactive 50-minute session, secondary math teachers will engage as learners in a student-centered, inquiry-based task designed to promote mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and data interpretation. Participants will experience firsthand what it feels like to grapple with an open-ended task, using the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs) and computational thinking to make sense of the problem and uncover multiple pathways to a solution. Following the task, we will reflect on the moves and questions that supported student thinking and explore how to intentionally design or adapt lessons that encourage inquiry. Emphasis will be placed on how teachers can use purposeful questioning and computational thinking to guide students toward deeper understanding, rather than steering them toward a single "correct" answer.

From Kindergarten to CAST: A Schoolwide Strategy for 5th Grade Science Success LIMITED
Friday August 8, 2025 1:45pm - 3:00pm PDT

Physical Education? How About Sports Education! LIMITED
Friday August 8, 2025 1:45pm - 3:00pm PDT
In this session, we’ll share how we shifted from a traditional Physical Education format to a student-centered Sports Education model. Students are placed in teams with assigned roles—such as coach, fitness coach, statistician, and public relations officer—and take the lead in running practices, creating fitness plans, and managing their team’s progress. Throughout the unit, they document everything using Google Sites, building both digital literacy and accountability. We’ll walk through how we structure the model, manage roles, assess student work, and keep things organized. You’ll leave with practical tools, templates, and examples to help you implement this approach in your own classes. If you're looking for a way to give students more ownership and purpose in Physical Education, this is a solid place to start.

Differentiating Gamified Education with Decktoys LIMITED
Friday August 8, 2025 1:45pm - 3:00pm PDT
