Create a Video Game that Tells a Story? LIMITED
Friday August 8, 2025 9:45am - 11:00am PDT
Who is Jerry Lawson? Gerald "Jerry" Lawson was an African American engineer and inventor who is sometimes called the "father of modern gaming". He was instrumental in the development of the 1976 Fairchild Channel F, the first home video game console to use interchangeable cartridges. His work influenced the design of the Atari 2600 and paved the way for later systems like the Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation. Help your students create a story using video game creation as a tool to spark their creativity.

What if We Let Students Lead the Thinking? -The Power of WEll-Timed Questions LIMITED
Friday August 8, 2025 1:45pm - 3:00pm PDT
In this interactive 50-minute session, secondary math teachers will engage as learners in a student-centered, inquiry-based task designed to promote mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and data interpretation. Participants will experience firsthand what it feels like to grapple with an open-ended task, using the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs) and computational thinking to make sense of the problem and uncover multiple pathways to a solution. Following the task, we will reflect on the moves and questions that supported student thinking and explore how to intentionally design or adapt lessons that encourage inquiry. Emphasis will be placed on how teachers can use purposeful questioning and computational thinking to guide students toward deeper understanding, rather than steering them toward a single "correct" answer.
